RON ELY!
Face the Music was something I call Name That Tune's sister show, as it was produced by the same company of Sandy Frank Productions. This was an interesting twist to NTT, and this is how:
MAIN GAME:
Three new challengers compete in the game. They are shown a series of images, and then they hear a tune to one of those images, and buzzing in with the right answer gets a chance to correctly put the tune to the right image they saw, and doing so won 10 points. But if they incorrectly name a tune, they must sit out the next question.
ROUND 2:
Now, Ely would give them a noun-clue (a.k.a. person, place, thing), and the contestants get to name tunes referring to that clue. If they get the clue right, they get a chance to name the thing the tunes are referring to, and doing so won 20 points. Of course, getting an incorrect clue sat out the next question, as from round 1. Up to 4 tunes were played for each clue, and on occasions in most songs, vocalist Lisa Donovan would sing a vocal tune to a song. When time ran out in this round, the contestant in last place was eliminated from the game.
ROUND 3:
This was much like round 2, only this time, correct answers won 30 points, and if you got an incorrect answer, the opponent would get a chance to answer. At the end of the game, whoever was ahead won a prize and went on to the Championship round.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME:
The winning challenger now gets to face off the returning champion in the Championship game. Recall seeing the baby picture in the intro? They now get to try and recall it to win $10,000. To do so, players listen to musical clues, and once a player has the answer, they say the right song title, and try to identify the person. Getting the clue on the first picture, the contestant gets 10 seconds to study the picture very closely, and if they answer correctly, it's $10,000 in cash. If not, then the next picture will be another one of the same person, just grown up. The second picture is $5,000 in prizes, the 3rd is $4,000, and so forth to the 6th picture worth $1,000 in prizes. As soon as a contestant reveals the identity of the person, they become champion and win the allotted amount above the picture. If a champ goes undefeated 5 times, they win a brand-new car. In the first season, if a champion can go 10 times undefeated, they win a trip around the world. The second season, they remained until defeated.
-The intros were always introduced with a shot from the pilot in 1979, which actually featured 4 contestants. And then in the credits Ron and the contestant would go and talk to the band, and after a shot of the FTM logo board, they'd magically be back on the other side.
-Singer, Lisa Donovan is known very publically on YouTube. Her YT name is LisaNova. She also has an official website, at http://www.lisadonovan.com.
-Tommy Oliver was a popular orchestra leader, including on Name That Tune with both Tom Kennedy and Jim Lange. After working with the show of Donny & Marie and other stuff, Oliver died on May 2nd, 2004.
-Ron Ely is best-known for his "Tarzan" role on NBC in 1966.
-All episodes of this show are known to exist, as they have been seen re-run on The Family Channel, CBN, and USA.
-The band went "on strike" after compliments of one of Ely's jokes, but they quickly relented
-Preferably the only 10-time champ was Sarabeth Rothfeld. Her 10th match, she identified Debbie Reynolds in the Championship game for $3,000 in prizes and won a trip for two around the world.
